The term 'migrant' refers to their action as in moving from one place to another. Since there was no country during the Chief's time, those people will become 'settlers' in a free land. Indians owned squat.
True but keep in mind that there were many Indian nations, but to the Indian philosophy, they did not "own" the land, land was not property, there were no treaties or contracts or surveyors, that is a western idea. To the Indian culture, the land was owned by the spirit of the sky, the mountains, the air, rain and land. These were the true owners of the land, and the Indian like the buffalo were simply grateful residents, a part of the land giving thanks for their bounty.
