An Answer To Tea Parties, "Why Now?"

[edit] Turnout

A crowd of protestors at the Louisville TEA Party on April 15.April 15 was the date of the largest number of tea parties, with demonstrations reported to be occurring in more than 750 cities.[34] Actual numbers of protesters varied from location to location. Statistican and liberal political activist Nate Silver noted the largest protests were in capitals and large cities, while many others had little or no reliable media coverage and were not included. He reported cumulative crowd size from various newspapers to be around 311,460 for 346 cities, including essentially all large cities and state capitals.[70] Christian Science Monitor has stated that "By some estimates, over half a million Americans took to the streets", which would make the protests the largest since March 25, 2006, where 750,000 protested in support of rights and protections for immigrants. It also stated that "Critics doubt the higher estimates of the turnout, and say the numbers represent the extreme right rather than a burgeoning political counterpoint to President Obama and current Washington policies."[32]

I don’t understand this “tea party” thing. First of all, the original tea party was a protest concerning “taxation without representation’. We have representation. Obama was elected.
We don't have representation. The only group that has representation are the special interest groups

Then get with like-minded people and form a special interest group. People do have representation. We live in a democratic republic. People vote for people to represent them. The people voted for Obama. It is as simple as that.

Tea party's were attended by the disperate factions of the right wing. Most of those 'protesting taxes' apparently didn't realize that they got a tax cut. I suppose many could have been those who make more than a quarter million dollars a year, although they probably just paid some of their minons to attend for them.

Others seemed to be there to simply hurl invectives at the President.

In other words Repubs being Repubs.

Its an issue I am concerned about.

I have already seen attempts to increase the turnout in peoples minds.

I have a right to my onw concerns and telling me I cant be concerned about what I am concerned about does what good for you?

The numbers are beside the point.

It was obvious that the tea parties were something that came out of the right wing political machine, being promoted by Fox News and the right wing radio echo chamber.

No one but the promoters think this was a significant event.

And TM, who thinks it's *quite* significant. So significant, in fact, that she just grabbed the first thing that suited her agenda, and got burned with it.

Who do you think is disputing it?

the very people who want us to think it was much bigger than it was.

The very same peopel who have scheduled the Next one on July 4th so they can mingle into 4th parades and such and inflate their numbers.

Why are you concerned?

I seen one of those Tea picnics--because it was neither party nor protest in my opinion.

Miami--Sunday afternoon, Flag wavers and anti-tax placards litter two blocks of the downtown area. Pro-american music wafted in the air, mixed with the smells of hot dogs and cigerette smoke. Usually a sleepy day, Miami became alive with protests. Both young and old stood up and demonstrated against the Democratic controlled government and what they precieved to be the destruction of the nation as it veers towards SOCIALISM.

"This is about the debt that has amassed over the years" one patriotic conservative told me. "It is about the nation we are leaving for the next generation".

Although I pointed out that maybe they are a COUPLE OF DECADES late, the young conservative said "It is never too late to save this nation"

On the side, some people were abit confused over what the protests were about. An elderly Black man said "They are upset because we have a BLACK PRESIDENT". A younger Hispanic lady suggested that the protestors were angry because the Republicans lost the elections. I told many of the onlookers to go and talk to these Brave and patriotic conservatives about why they are protesting. A few hesistated. They suggested it was Right-wing extremism and they did not want HMS knocking on their door because they asked a right winger a question.

It was a bright day in Miami. Yet fear of the government may produce a darker night for our entire nation.

Your obvious fear overcomes what little reason you may have once possessed.

But yes, if you fear people's participation in their constitutional First Amendment right of redress, then be afraid.

Be very afraid...

I suppose you got your info from CNN or MSNBC.

I attended one of those tea parties and believe me it wasn't attended by rich far right wingers. These were ordinary middle class people, most with their kids in tow. My sister...who voted dem was there as was my mother who has never been to a rally before in her life.

I don't know if the tea parties are going to be successful in getting the gov. to pay attention to fiscal responsibility, but I hope so. If people continue these protests they will be harder and harder to ignore.

As for your other post. I know that under Obama's plan I will get a tax break. That isn't why people were out in force that day. They are there because this gov. (Bush included) is burying us under a mountain of debt and they need to learn to STAY WITHIN THEIR BUDGET, just like they expect the American public to do.

KUDOS! To all of those who attended the Tea Party demonstrations!! Let the left-wingers stew and burn for awhile. Love to see those misguided loonies squirm.
