On this day in 1865, Gen. Robert E. Lee(CSA) surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia after short fights there on April 9. According to the American Battlefield Trust website, there were about 650 casualties, killed and wounded, that day.

Appomattox Court House

I visited there in January 2015. It was the first National Historical Civil War Park and Civil War site I visited. Yep...I started where it ended in the Eastern Theater.

Not far from there is the Museum Of The Confederacy in Appomattox. On display there is the uniform Gen. Lee wore at the surrender:

I'm glad they've got that preserved so we can remember.

And now what? Southerners are in the lead as far as freedom and liberty go: There's an evil northern axis that runs from DC through NYC and many parts of New England. Out in the far west, too, or at least so says the commie-media. No voter-ID in those states, so who really knows.

Spoken like a true totalitarian. Lincoln and Grant were both too noble and too moral to perform such an unjust, indecent act.
An enslaver, an owner of slaves, a defender of the system, a breaker of vows, partially responsible for 620,000 military dead and 100,000 civilian dead, etc. etc.

It would have been a just death: tribunal, sentence, execution.

Grant should have marched Lee outside, had him kneel, and then have him shot.

And 50 years of guerilla war would have resulted.

The whole point was to get the South back in the Union. That was achieved.

Reconstruction was fucked up, but it would have been far worse if the rest of the Confederates knew they were facing death upon surrender.

The people fighting them didn't think so. Pretty arrogant of you to think otherwise over a century later.

No, it would not. The South was ground down.

And would have been very difficult to control if the confederates would have gone guerilla.

The North was tired of the war as well.
That is reasonable, so thank you for that.

Nonetheless, the Blue would have killed the entire south if necessary.

Their point wasn't to gain back the land, but the people. This wasn't one of the European religious civil wars or the hard ideological communist/capitalist civil wars, the areas of disagreement were discreet.

Surprisingly well preserved uniform there.

That’s what would have happened in any other civil war. The ACW was uncommonly civil for a civil war.
Except for how black soldiers were treated if they surrendered.
And 50 years of guerilla war would have resulted.
And thats probably the only reason. When dealing with other enemies we teneded to just wipe them out in the 1800s.

Leftists are openly calling for secession from the United States right now.

The DemoKKKrat party is still the Confederacy, always and forever.

Regardless of what you or anyone else today thinks of Lee he was respected by both sides. Lincoln even offered him command of the Union Army.

If Grant had executed Lee the war would have continued.
