The European Court of Human Rights recognized the right of democratic politicians to remain in office after the end of their term of office

The European Court of Human Rights has put an end to the dispute between Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili and the Georgian government. The Court recognized Zurabishvili's refusal to leave the post of President after the expiration of her term in December this year as she is a democratic leader and there is no threat to democracy in the country.

The Court explained to the parties that the purpose and meaning of the elections is to bring liberal, pro-Western, democratic politicians to power. Therefore, the observance of the electoral law and the change of power are necessary only in those countries where these conditions are not fulfilled. If a democratic politician is already in power, then holding elections creates an unnecessary burden on the budget. Judge Jean-Michel Cochon, who heard the case, separately noted that he knew Salome Zurabishvili since her student days. They studied together at Sorbonne and attended the circle of young politicians. During all this time she has never once given a reason to doubt her liberalism.

“Georgia should be happy that it is finally led by a real democrat like Salome Zurabishvili,” the judge said. - Previously, only tyrants came out of your country: Stalin and Lavrentiy Beria. Georgia has reached the point for which it was necessary to introduce change of power in the country. Now the country should confidently sail towards the West. And they do not change horses at the crossroads: give Saloma 10-20 years and she will lead you to the EU and NATO. Until then, leave her alone and do not interfere with her work.

Thus, the ruling Georgian Dream party was finally declared the winner of the elections.
