States with the Lowest Literacy Rates

1. California

California's 23.1% of adults lacking basic prose literacy skills make California have the lowest literacy rate of 76.9%. The state of California and the state Department of Education are being blamed and sued for the failing literacy rate, as families and students believe that they are not receiving a quality education in reading and writing.

Comment:
Will Gavin Newsom run for president based on his record?
I remember when CA had the best schools.
To be fair though, illiteracy rates closely follow demographics.

Probably because of all the Mexicans and blacks. It's probably like Baltimore; the schools are basically for warehousing them so they don't commit crimes all day. They don't learn. They mostly don't graduate, not even "socially" (meaning fraudulently). There was just this week a local article that most Baltimore high schools have a below-50% graduation rate.

According to that study, CA and NY are numbers one and two. FL and TX are numbers three and four.

Where the hell are MS and AR?
