Can Barghouti Save the Peace Process?

Barghouti should be released as a matter of pragmatic decision-making on Israel's part. It seems though with the new "sanctions," Netanyahu still doesn't understand the importance of maintaining a moderate Palestinian Authority.

He is beginning his 12th year of 5 life sentences.

Israel has released people with more blood on their hands. He's not an Israeli citizen, but a diplomatic chess piece. He needs to be released before Abbas leaves the stage.

It is not just a matter of releasing him but of him being elected to replace Abbas at the soonest election following his release. He is not just another prisoners with blood, he organized bombings attacks during the intafada. He is not a just a soldiers, he was a "general" leading the war.
For now there can be no election till there is an agreement of unity between Abbas and Hamas.

There can be an election in the West Bank. Barghouti is enormously popular and will easily defeat Ismail Haniyeh should he decide to run.

and ignore half the palestinian population of the PA? Would an election in the US be valid if only the east coast was allowed to vote?

Hamas is forcibly in control of Gaza. An agreement with Israel doesn't concern them until they rejoin the PLO, if they do. Israel certainly still has an interest in separating itself from most of the West Bank regardless.

After passover there might be a release of the original 26 prisoners, 14 Israeli arabs, that the PA listed but Abbas would have to drop his demand of 1200 prisoners he uped it to before talks fell apart.
Pollard said he did not want his release to be part of any prisoner deal and turned down his upcoming parole hearing, but it seems he might end up in exchange.
This is some dance. First they say they do and then they don't, then they say they will and then they won't.....
Why Abbas thought he could up the demands and threaten to end the talks and expect Israel to comply was insane. On the other side, Bennett through he could pull out and force the coalition to fall apart over the prisoners was nonsense.
This may not happen, but if it does it won't be anything close to what Abbas was demanding.
It might have been sanctions on the tax money or threat of annexation of 60% of the WB. Unless they actually come back to the table it won't really matter.
