What are you talking about?...cartoons killed Russians?
It's nice. Explaining the reasons and details of Ukrainian conflict to someone who doesn't even know about Banderlogs and Vatniks at all, you know, it's like explaining someone who doesn't know about Republicans and Democrats details of American inner policy.
Quite likely, it's meaningless. But I'll try.
Oversimplificating, Banderlogs are "Banderovci", followers of Stepan Bandera, Ukrainian Nazionalist and Nazi collaborator in the years of WWII. They are most common in Western Ukraine, and in political terms we can call them "pro-German", "anti-Russian", "anti-Polish", "anti-Jewish" and "generally xenophobic", and usually they are ready to accept any submission position by the leg of their foreign non-Russian masters. In some way one can compare them with Cajuns.
In sub-cultural terms Kipling's quote is quite fit them:

They are always going to elect a leader, make their own laws, come up with customs, but they never carry out their plans."

Another numerous group is Vatniks ("quilted jackets"). They often consider themselves as Russians, but even when they are not, they don't think that the difference is important. Politically you can call them "pro-Moscow", they believe that alliance with Moscow (or even deeper integration) is better (safer and more profitable) option. They do like when the government can protect them and, quite often, they do protect pro-Russian (or Russian) government. In some way you can compare them with rednecks and NRA. And they are most common in Eastern and Southern regions of former Ukraine.
In "normal" situation Vatniks prevail because it is the natural way of things. But, step by step, with significant western financial support (direct and indirect) Banderlogs came to power (as the result of illegal and anti-Constitutional Maidan coup) and started to do what they were hired for - kill Russians.
