Full Story:Trump pushes Congress to privatize air traffic control

"President Donald Trump on Monday urged Congress to privatize the U.S. air traffic control system, saying it would make U.S. airports more efficient.

At a White House event attended by GOP lawmakers, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and airline industry representatives, Trump signed a letter sending his legislative priorities to Congress. The event was largely symbolic, as lawmakers need to pass a plan before Trump can sign it into law.

The push to privatize air traffic control, largely supported by U.S. airlines and long backed by some congressional Republicans, would separate the function from the Federal Aviation Administration. In his remarks, Trump said he seeks to set up a "self-financing, nonprofit organization" that will not need taxpayer money to function.

"If we adopt these changes, Americans can look forward to cheaper, faster and safer travel," Trump said.

The complex FAA air traffic control system oversees about 50,000 flights in the U.S. per day and is considered one of the safest in the world. However, it has faced criticism over the pace of its transition from radar systems to satellite and digital operations."

Good idea and LONG overdue, next step privatize airport security.

Mm, air traffic control is working. If they wanted to privatize a useless government thing at a airport they would do this with TSA. So far they are zero for zero in ever preventing anything and most ar such fat slobs they couldn't do shit if they had to.

Airport security has been privatized in several major airports. They have also been the source of many failures.

If you think a private company can make a profit doing what the TSA does, you are one heck of a businessman.
It doesn't need to operate at a profit , it's an operating expense for the airlines and it's one that tax payers are subsidizing whether they ever travel via air or not, let the airlines get together and figure out how best to operate it and let the people that actually do the traveling pay the full cost of it.

It's not like the government is doing a good job at it or have any incentive to control costs, just the opposite.

Over 80% of the costs are already paid by the taxes associated with the Airport and Airway Trust Fund. Security fees on tickets fund the TSA. but at a much lower percentage. Those funds will have to come from somewhere.

Yup, privatize the TSA. Put physical fitness standards as well as make your avrage TSA agent have to at a minimum have to have a high school diploma. As it is now, it's nothing but another welfare program for hood rats.

Go to the post office if you want to see how modern and up to date government is. Then go to Fed-Ex or UPS. I had to regularly hand write forms on EACH package for government shipments at USPS. 10 to 12 boxes each time.

Yup. I pay extra to ship with as little of my money going to the escibible that is our USPS. We have progress here though, they had to cut folks in the sorting room as well as their mail guys down to part time. Hopefully it folds up here soon.

It's not unreasonable, but one shouldn't have to pay top dollar for to get finger banged by a hood rat in line to go sit in an airplane on the tarmac for two hours.

Nobody said anything about "top dollar", just that everybody should have to pay 100% of their own travel costs and not foist part of them off on other tax payers nor do the airlines deserve the subsidy (just another form of corporate welfare) that doing so provides.

Postal service is a requirement for Government, not merely a profit margin and a bonus, or, "we are, out of here".

you think they can, "advertise for the rest of their services"?

LOL. You're on drugs.
I ask for "better products at lower cost" all the time.
Yeah, do that at the DMV while you are at it.

It is actually travelers that subsidize the government. The fees that are paid by travelers goes into the general fund to reduce the deficit.

The Shuster proposal is a terrible way to do it. The Shuster proposal is a sop to unions and that is why it has not even received a vote. I hope that continues until we see a better proposal.

Only the right wing is that silly.

Nothing is more certain than the indispensable necessity of government, and it is equally undeniable, that whenever and however it is instituted, the people must cede to it some of their natural rights in order to vest it with requisite powers.--The Federalist Number Two

.

How do you figure that?

The TSA receives approximately $2 billion a year from carrier and passenger fees (the largest of which is the Aviation Security Passenger Fee) and has an annual budget of more than $7 billion a year, meaning that it gets over $5 billion a year of its operating budget (around 70%) from TAX PAYERS, meaning that tax payers that aren't using those services are subsidizing the ones that do.

Secondly none of the aviation security fees go "into the general fund to reduce the deficit", the first $250 million goes into the Aviation Security Capital Fund which is used to provide security related airport modifications and equipment, the rest is used as offsets against the TSA budget but as I said that only covers about 30% of what the TSA actually costs.
