The American Communist Party and offshoots like the Socialist Workers Party were part of both coalitions supporting them.
I was a high school student protesting the war in Philadelphia and turned down recruitment from them at the time.

Communism was secularized around the main social issues of Civil Rights and the Vietnam war back then. It morphed into socialism, a more acceptable form in the 70's with the popularity of Eugene McCarthy and alot of other Democrats. Nonetheless, the spectre of Communism provides the main impetus behind socialism. Sort of 'Communist Lite'.
In the 70's, the advent of Socialist leaning professors in our universities and colleges began, which has continued unabated to this day to the point where only 1 in 7 professors are conservative.
The result is that one of our two major parties has gone full blown socialist. Communism laid the groundwork, was not sanitized completely, and continues to have significant influence, over the Democrat Party.
