One of the great movies

Stephen Furst, best known for his performance as the hapless Flounder in Animal House and put-upon rookie doc Eliott Axelrod on St. Elsewhere, died yesterday due to complications from diabetes.

His death was announced by his sons Nathan and Griffith Furst, who asked that fans “celebrate his life by watching one of his movies or use one of his bits to make someone else laugh – really, really hard.” See their entire statement below.

Furst had a couple of small credits before landing the part of Kent “Flounder” Dorfman in 1978’s Animal House.

He was good in St Elsewhere

"Outta the way herkama jerkama " William Daniels would admonish

His best known role was actually in Babylon 5 the blockbuster sci-fi TV series of the 90's as Vir Cotto. That show ran for 5 years. Everyone's heard of Animal House, but he was just a minor role and that was just one movie, funny as he was. Dude battled diabetes most of his life due to a weight problem.

Sad news. "Oh boy is this great!" Immortalized in Animal House. Sorry to see him pass.

F@ck, very funny actor. He was at least equal to all the pros in the Animal House movie.

Though I too first saw Stephen Furst in Animal House, I best remember him as Vir Cotto, the bumbling aide to the Centauri ambassador on Babylon 5, who in the end, proved to be made of sterner stuff than all the potentates in the galaxy. This scene from one of the last B5 shows I think is a bit poignant under the circumstances. Please note, that aside from Boxleitner, all the men at this table have now passed beyond.

Wow, I agree with you. Furst was fantastic in that role, where he was both funny and had a lot of dramatic heft. (Essentially, he was the voice of reason when his people blundered into a cruel and stupid war against the Narn.)

B5 was Star Wars with a brain.
