GOP goes all-in on ‘de-fund ObamaCare,’ as shutdown looms

GOP leaders unveiled their plan to members on Wednesday morning, teeing up a vote for Friday -- the proposed bill would tie the vote to de-fund the health care law to a vote on a stopgap spending bill. Current funding for the government is set to expire at the end of the month, and lawmakers must approve the stopgap bill in order to keep Washington open; conservatives see this as leverage to force a suspension of ObamaCare.

"The law's a trainwreck," Boehner said of the Affordable Care Act. "It's time to protect American families from this unworkable law."

Boehner: House Will Pass CR That Defunds Obamacare
September 18, 2013 -- House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), appearing with other Republican leaders on Wednesday, said the House will pass a continuing resolution (CR) that defunds Obamacare and lets the Senate deal with it. He also indicated that Republicans will use debt limit legislation as leverage in an attempt to cut spending.
Two other Republicans said their conference has agreed to "delay" Obamacare. "This week, the House will pass a CR that locks the sequester savings in and defunds Obamacare," Boehner said. "The president has signed seven bills over the last year to make changes to Obamacare, and I sincerely hope our friends in the Senate have plans to make this an eighth time." He refused to predict what the Senate will do. Calling the law a "train wreck," Boehner said, "it's time to protect American families from this unworkable law."

Boehner also indicated Republicans are willing to demand spending cuts as part of legislation increasing the nation's borrowing limit: "You know, for decades, Congresses and presidents have used the debt limit for legislation to cut spending. And even President Obama worked with us two years ago in the debt limit negotiations to put controls on spending. This year is not going to be any different," Boehner said.

'Delay'

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said, "In the coming week, we will unveil a plan to extend our nation's ability to borrow while delaying Obamacare and protecting working middle class families from its horrific effects. Republicans "aim to put a stop to Obamacare before it costs one more job or raises a family's out of pocket expenses one more dollar. And that fight will continue as we negotiate the debt limit with the president and the Senate," Cantor said. Republicans also plan to make tax reform and the Keystone pipeline part of those discussions, he added.

Cantor asked that Obama "finally engage with Congress and work with us on behalf of the American fammily." Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said the Republican conference is "united" on their next move: "I think you're going to see a very big excitement coming through this week and next week as well as we move legislation. The excitement is the united conference going after the battle we've always been willing to wage. But now we're going to look foward to the Senate joining with us."

WH Says GOP Has 'Moved Away From Compromise', Then Vows Not to Compromise
September 18, 2013 -- White House spokesperson Jay Carney criticized Republican leaders for moving “away from compromise,” but when asked if the administration would accept any delay in Obamacare, he replied, “No.”
"House Republicans have decided to pursue a path away from the center, away from compromise in favor of voting on a piece of legislation that they know will not become law,” Carney said Wednesday. Earlier in the day, GOP leaders announced their plan to approve a continuing resolution (CR) spending bill through Dec. 15 that includes legislation to defund Obamacare.

House Republicans also claimed they would unveil a plan next week that would delay Obamacare as part of a vote to raise the debt ceiling. When asked if the administration was willing to accept any delay in Obamacare in order to avoid a government shutdown, Carney replied, “No. The Congress passed the Affordable Care Act. The president signed it. The Supreme Court upheld it as constitutional.”

According to Carney, White House strategy in the debate over funding the government and raising the debt ceiling includes President Obama talking with business leaders and expressing the need for compromise. “Business leaders who have no small amount of influence over leaders in Washington, including, you might say - especially Republican leaders - about the need for responsible compromise when it comes to our budgeting and responsible action by Congress when it comes to extending the debt ceiling,” Carney said.

When asked if it was the president’s position to not negotiate over the debt ceiling Carney replied, “Correct.” Carney insisted that it’s in Congress’ power to raise the debt ceiling and the responsibility lies with them.

could be a safe bet for republicans especially if obama says he's going to get those responsible.

Yes, it's about time Boehner grew a couple.

The Obama administration has cast twelve hundred (1200) votes against ObamaCare....

"Roughly 1,200 companies received waivers from part of the healthcare reform law, the Health and Human Services Department said Friday.

Friday marks the last time HHS will have to update the total number of waivers, putting to rest a recurring political firestorm. The department had been updating its waiver totals every month, prompting monthly attacks from the GOP."

It’s only OK when they do it, apparently.

wrong move. they need to tie obamacare to the debt ceiling increase not the CR imho.

Then again, it's not JUST about funding... it's ALSO about having a change-of-heart, about shoving another compulsory program down the throats of the American People.

The Speaker and some percentage of the Pubs in the House, have had a change of mind?

Many of them weren't too keen on it in the lead-up to passage anyway.

They can change their minds if they want, I guess.

I don't see what the big deal is, in changing one's mind.
