A report published by the Home Office alongside the figures said the number of firearms fell from 418,300 to 295,000 between 1996 and 1998 as tighter controls were introduced in the wake of the Dunblane shootings.

“Since 31 December 1998, there has been an upward trend. The number of firearms as at 31 March 2015 was 78.0% higher (230,125) than as at 31 December 1998,” the report said . . .

There were more than 1.3 million shotguns and 525,125 other firearms covered by licences at the end of March, official data showed.

The combined total of 1,863,524 is the largest recorded since statistics were first collected in 1995.

Hmmmm....we are told that more guns will lead to more killing.....then why hasn't Britain experienced that....? I will tell you....culture...their history of feudalism, and the pacifism created by the devestation of WW 1 and 2 have created a criminal culture that has as much access to guns as American criminals do, but they don't use them as often....

The UK didn't start collecting gun ownership until 1995??!! Really? The first settlers in this country were gun toting guys way back then. I'm just surprised the UK was such a late comer to being concerned about hun ownership. I know some years back they clamped down so hard everyone armed themselves with knives. There were so many stabbing the cops put up drop boxes so citizens could put their knives in there voluntarily and the boxes were filled up, surprisingly.

After the escape from Dunkirk the Brits didn't have enough weapons for their army. They begged us for guns which we sent over in large numbers. The NRA gathered up tens of thousands that were sent over then issued to the various home guard units.

Had the Germans just pushed across the channel there is very little the Brits could have done to stop them.
