āHarvard University said on Monday that it had rejected policy changes requested by the Trump administration, becoming the first university to directly refuse to comply with the administrationās demands and setting up a showdown between the federal government and the nationās wealthiest university.
Other universities have pushed back against the Trump administrationās interference in higher education. But Harvardās response, which essentially called the Trump administrationās demands illegal, marked a major shift in tone for the nationās most influential school, which has been criticized in recent weeks for capitulating to Trump administration pressure.ā
Federal officials said Harvard must enact āmerit-based reformā in hiring and admissions and report international students who broke rules, among other steps. Harvard called the demands unlawful.
