The 5.56 is not a powerful round

it's a .22 caliber slug with a higher velocity that's all.

My 6.8 mm rifle has barely any more recoil than a 5.56 and is over 20% more powerful and it is still technically a .22 caliber round.

The powder itself has more to do with it than anything - 10gr of powder X can easily generate more velocity from a 40gr bullet than 30gr of powder Y and a 55gr bullet.
