How will the Trump tariffs actually work ?

That isnt his actual policy tho it would make more sense.
That isn't what he did in his first term, Tommy? Let's get real here!
The problem with the left's claim that Trump threatening tariffs will cause rampant inflation are belied by the fact that it never happened in his first term. Inflation never went above 2% during Trump's term despite his imposing tariffs on China.

So you’re saying that people will spend $90 on a bottle of good scotch but not $100?

I doubt that.
Possibly they will. But explain how that 100 dollar bottle brings back jobs ?
And of course the extra tarriff taxes are cash that they might spend on other things.

His first term was shambolic. He seems more organised this time.

Thanks but im not going to dig up your old posts.
To help you I will give an example.
10% on a bottle of single malt will add up to 10 dollars to the price. People will trade down and or the distillers will stop shipping.
Either way the outcomes are poor. Either the price goes up or the public get less choice.
It isnt a product you can replicate or import from anywhere else. Cognac is another and Parma ham as well.
He is proposing 60% on chinese goods. I can see the attraction but this would lead to huge shortages and much higher prices for consumers who are forced to buy expensive american goods.
Isn't it interesting that shortages and higher prices are all the fault of the politicians who impose tariffs (I have YET to see a single complaint about the CEOs who are promising to pass the higher costs onto the consumer), but shortages and higher prices caused by raising taxes are all the fault of the CEOs and never the politicians who increased the costs of doing business?

Why ? Rich folk will be ok. They will always be ok. Its the poor that will suffer.
Because it forces the companies to manufacture the goods in America if they want to avoid the tariffs. More American jobs result.

Tariffs are a blunt tool. How will they actually work ? I can only see prices rising and shortages on US shelves.

The targets he names are easily surmountable. Food and Cars. Well I see many cars from US companies. Ford,Cheverolet, General Motors and even Tesla.

Food is easily rectified by producing food prepared to European standards Not using Frankenstein technology. You have to adapt to the market you are selling to.

So what is likely to happen in the US and to its trade ?
Same way they work in Europe including the UK, you absolute muppet.

The Brits are still struggling with Brexit after four years and they give us advice about tariffs? Thank God we managed to throw the rascals out about 250 years ago.

Tariffs can be useful in enforcing standards, But to ask CEOs to make a penny less profit would lead to a coup and trump would be out on his arse.

Perhaps consumers will instead but a more affordable bottle of american single malt instead

The purpose of the tariffs is to make US manufactures more price competitive with imports in order to save or create US manufacturing jobs. Apparently the Democrats don't think saving US jobs is a worthwhile endeavor.
Those tarffs aren't going to save American jobs and neither will trump. Biden was right to start getting America prepared for the jobs of the future.

Targeted tariffs yes, but Trump is talking about a banket tariff.

Single malt isn't the issue. American companies moved overseas thans to incentives provided by Repubicans, specificaly Reagan.. If they come back here, they will have to pay a living wage instead of 3.00 a day, and that will be passed to the consumer.
