Trump threatens Apple with a 25% tariff if it doesn’t build iPhones in America

President Donald Trump on Friday demanded Apple make its iPhones in the United States or face a 25% tariff.

“I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else,” Trump posted Friday morning on Truth Social. “If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S.”

If Apple moved iPhone production to the U.S., the price would likely increase significantly, possibly tripling. Estimates range from $1,500 to $3,500 for a US-made iPhone, depending on the specific model and cost projections.

and here is a fact that means that many Americans will be affected negatively by this:

In 2022, there were an estimated 124.7 million iPhone users in the United States. This represents a significant share of the US smartphone market, with iPhone having a 57.68% market share.

Is Trump really thinking about benefitting Americans?

Don't buy a new I-phone every year. Problem solved. Prices don't go up on what you already own.

B.S, they moved their production out of China during covid when China refused to open up.

High tech, sensitive technology manufacturing needs to bring production back to America. The technology is too invasive and a threat to any Western population.

More importantly, there needs to be a direct competition to Apple from a local manufacturer.

Did I mention China in the OP?

If you read the article I provided, you would realize that it is India where the IPhones are now being made.

As far as you second paragraph, that is a general thought/idea that Trump (and evidently, you) are keying on but the reality is that in many ways that is hurting Americans more than helping them. Keep in mind that there are over 127 million Americans that use IPhones and now they won't or will have to pay more for them.

The competition does not offer cellular phones that are as good, meaning its a negative and not a positive.

What is wrong with the 127 million that they own? If they are so good, they are able to use them, are they not?

I totally disagree with your assessment. I have used many different phones and up to now, my IPhone has been the best of them
You're free to like them. I prefer to be able to do whatever I want with my phone. Not only what the manufacturer will allow.

What's wrong with building the stuff in the good old USA?
Nothing, other than the fact that U.S. things are more expensive and most people always look to ways they can save money so they can live the best way they can live. How do I benefit personally by buying American if I can buy something as good made elsewhere for a fraction of the cost?

Apple has been moving their production to China. They aren't about to stop since they have invested so much on that venture.

They've already announced a $500 billion investment in the US, so what the hell more does Trump want?

As I have said before, tariffs are a whack-a-mole game, and Trump doesn't get that. He learned NOTHING from his first failed tariff war. The result of his first trade war was that we ended up with a record trade deficit with China, and our trade deficit with Mexico also went up.

Trump is an idiot.

All of Trump's idiocy will be undone the day he leaves office, and all the importers have to do is wait him out.

Apple users suffer from Stockholm Syndrome.

iPhones are overpriced, VERY controlling, and are no better than their competition.

It's all hype.

Tim Cook is using what other nations are trying to do with Trump, engage in charm offensive.

In his case, suggest he will spend $500B in the U.S and get Trump off his back while he fleeces the consumer with exorbitant prices.
