Is saving private Ryan a great movie ???

It was a great movie, but not entirely accurate according to my father. He was a WWII veteran who landed in France a couple months after D Day. He walked out of the movie near the end, when they were fighting a Panzer unit. He said no US rifle company would dare take on such a unit, without armored support. That would be suicidal.

They won by using stinky bombs ??

I saw "Platoon" when I was in a reserve unit and college ROTC after having served an enlistment. I saw it with a fellow ROTC cadet with no military experience other than ROTC. After the movie, he asked me how real it was. I didn't know, I was too young for Vietnam.

As luck would have it, we saw an old sarge from my reserve unit. He said, "Hey Flops, you catch that M60 firing blanks?" because that's what he noticed, here at :36:

The cartidge is pinched off and has no slug.

I still thought it was a good movie, but I get it.

you tell me ??

Pros - opening scene , closing scene

Neg - characters very card board and 1 dimensional

Tom Hank’s and Matt Damion are both giant liberal dbags !!
Good, not great.

It had its moments but the plot could have used some work and I thought the directing a bit sloppy that made it tedious in places. Story line was well done. I agree with others the character development could have been a lot better. My less-than-professional judgment is I own a copy of the movie on Bluray and it gets maybe 3 out of 5 stars on our home rating system. Okay movie but no, not great.

To be honest the movie was not made for you....It was made to honor the men still living at the time who served......It was made in 1998, most WW-2 vets were in their 70s or better.
Well in fairness to Oddball, it would still have honored the WWII veterans had it been done a bit better.

The ending battle was cool too but no way they beat heavy armor division

My only complaint was the lens flare (why) when they got off the beach.
I have a lot of complaints. The stupidity of changing scopes on a sniper rifle. Totally ridiculous.

Dale Dye gave the SS troops marine Corp haircuts.

The sound of the Tiger engine was actually a British Conqueror tank because the real Maybach engine was too quiet.

I can go on and on about the technical errors, but why bother.

Well let's face it....We could both pick apart the tech aspects. ;)

Best scene:

I would be super scared if a panther division was coming my way and I had a riffle only
Like I am totally dead
