Justify: Why do we have such a massive military?

Deflection by peach174.

By expenditures, we have a larger military than the NEXT 25 COUNTRIES.

Such expenditures are unnecessary.

End of sotry.

Numbers don't lie China has the largest Military.
The Expenses are due many things that needs correction. We should not reduce our Military numbers.
We need to correct the wasteful spending.
We need to correct and reduce the private contractors that is driving up the cost.

So we won't have another 911?

Having a massive military didn't stop 9/11 in the first place. There is no reason to believe it will stop the next 9/11. Good intelligence work can stop things like 9/11; a big military has nothing to do with it. On another note, our military isn't that massive in size. The fact is that the vast majority of spending goes to bigger and better toys, some necessary, and some not so much.

Ok. Many have said we need to have the tough talks about budget. Alright. Lets begin.

Military. Why do we have/need the biggest military, by far, in the world? Questions:

1- Our neighbors are Mexico and Canada. We are surrounded by vast oceans. We have one of the most easily defensible plots of land in the world. In fact, we barely have a legit threat in the entire hemisphere.

2- Are we the World Police? I know people argue that we are. WHY? Why us? Why not slash all that spending and downsize. Let the world police itself.

So, either we are the World Police, and we are OK with our tax money being spent to police the rest of the world....or we need to seriously downsize. We dont have an immediate threat anywhere in the hemisphere. Even if we slashed our military with massive cuts, we'd still be unmatched by any other nation.

Entitlements can be the next talk. The next thread. THIS thread is on this topic. So.....from righties and lefties...what is the justification for this massive military? We need to JUSTIFY ever tax dollar spent. Its the fiscally responsible thing to do. Justify it.

We do not have the biggest Military by far in the World.
China does.
China - 2 million 285,000
American 1 million 458,219
Active Muslim Terrorists Worldwide approximately 1 million 800,000, potential future amount 300 Million.
We must keep this potential amount down to as low as it can be. If they actually reached the 300 million amount, the world would have a very big problem on their hands. The expense would be enormous.
Our Federal Government is suppose to have Military enough to defend us.
It is the number one thing the Feds are required to do by our Constitution not Entitlements.
Korea, China and Muslim terrorism a still very much a threat to the U.S.

2 Million Chinese soldiers are required to keep 1.5 billion Chinese under control.
They lack the ability to press their military might around the world

1. Doesn't matter because China is not going to invade the Americas and we are not going to fight them on the Asian Mainland.

2. Yes, we should reduce numbers.

3. Yes.

4. Yes.

I think RW agrees "that the US military could be smaller" and still keep the oil flowing and the sea lanes open and our exports/imports trade happy.

If we were drilling for our own oil, if obama had not blocked the keystone pipeline, we would not need to worry about "keeping the oil flowing". We are dependent on foreign oil because of the liberal stupidity of the federal govt.

Bullshit.

President Obama didn't "block" anything. Republicans were in a rush to embarrass him. And several states had no taste for the project being ramroded through them given the "safety" standards that keystone was demonstrating in dealing with their own products. Their disaster recovery plans were a joke and as the Tar Sand oil spill in Kalamazoo proves, you'd better know what you are doing in regards to this.

Henry Henderson: Kalamazoo River Spill: Two Years Later and the Tar Sands Mess in Michigan Still Looks Ugly

This week marks the two-year anniversary of the massive Kalamazoo River pipeline spill. The event looks very different now than it did in 2010, when authorities openly worried that the Michigan mess would ooze tar sands oil into the Great Lakes. While there is still work underway to sop up the spill, it already stands as the longest and costliest pipeline cleanup in American history. And the ongoing investigations have given us a clearer and more frustrating view of the disaster, making it clear to anyone looking that our growing affinity for Canada’s bottom-of-the-barrel unconventional tar sands oil is unsafe on a variety of levels.

sorry, but the bullshit is only spewing from your keyboard. the country is criss crossed with pipelines, they are safe and secure. obama hates oil and blocked keystone to appease his envirowacko supporters.

BTW, how is our 500 mill solar investment in Solyndra working out?

Not even close

Trying to use China as a replacement for the USSR as a threat does not cut it

When push came to shove and we saw how weak the USSR was in reality, it is hard to justify our Cold War buildup let alone a peacetime buildup for today

The neo-cons will fail with pushing Red China as a military threat.

Defense will be slashed, kids, accept it.

We have more domestic oil production under Obama than we did under Bush. Keystone helps Canada get their oil to market. Without Keystone, Canada has no option but to sell that oil to us.

R&D investments do not always work out. We spent a lot of money on the fledgling oil industry. Many, many, many oil wells were dry. How did that work out?

So what happens when Iran and Korea get nuclear capabilities and they sell them to Muslim Terrorist's?
Then they sneak in through our unsecured Mexican Boarder to detonate suitcase nukes here in the U.S?
Not smart at all to reduce our Military numbers.

How do you defend those things with numbers?

Do you even know what our current defense spending levels are? Do you know what our defense spending is in relation to the Cold War? Do you know what our defense spending is in relation to the entire period from WWII to just before 9/11?

I posted all that in this topic, but I think you are still absolutely clueless.

Um..no links and nothing to back up what you posted.

You posted bullshit..and it's still bullshit.

So what I'm getting out of this thread is that the justification for our over bloated military is so we can be the world police...America the white horse riding in to save the day.

Screw our poor, our schools, our education. We have to beat up all the world's bad guys instead.

I don't often agree with you, but in this case you are absolutely correct.

Reps on the way!

Lack of "wealth" and poor education have little to do with lack of funding from the government. It's like pissing into the ocean.

More production on PRIVATE land, LESS on public. Google is your friend.

Can you show us where the US taxpayer financed those dry wells? I doubt it...

Since 9/11, our government has created a massive Big Brother intelligence network for spying both domestically and overseas that is approaching our active duty force in size.

There are few things more totalitarian than the idea that we should make something permanent that was created for an emergency.

This explosion in growth in the intelligence and military communities is a gigantic boondoggle. A bonanza of cash borrowed from China to fatten the coffers of contractors.

We have had far more greater existential threats than what we face now. Much, much greater. Mutual Assured Destruction. The Soviet threat to Europe. And we did not spend anywhere near as much money on defense during those times. Not during Korea, not during Vietnam, not during the Reagan buildup, and not during the entire Cold War.

Wake the fuck up! There simply is NO justification for this. None. Blathering on about what we need when you are gibbering away in historical ignorance just makes you look like piss drinking rubes of your puppeteers. Fucking idiot fiscal liberals.

We are not in a World War, not even close. We have nowhere near the commitments we had in WWI. But we are borrowing and spending like we are.

My agreement stems not so much with schools and education, charter schools have proven the lie that 'more money equals better education', but there is absolutely no reason for America to operate HUNDREDS of military bases overseas that act as 'military welfare' for our friends and allies.

We close bases here at home, hurting our own economy, and open them on foreign soil, helping theirs.

Nonsensical, IMHO.

Why the hell doesn't the new northern Keystone XL pipeline just follow the route of the existing Keystone pipeline, you know the one that goes through North Dakota? See?

Military Spending is the SOCIALIST component of our economy that compensates for the fact the private sector free-enterprise system is a gross failure.

It's SOCIALISM with a "middle-man" and those "middle-men" not only make a fortune off of the American Tax payer, but use that money to control the political system and world events.
