There is this thing called, "internal polling," which refers to polls that are taken by the candidates' insiders, and they have a lot more confidence in those results than the ones that we read elsewhere, such as in Real Clear Politics.

I recall an article about Jimmy Carter during the 1980 campaign. He and Roz were told IN SEPTEMBER that they needed to "clean out the closets" because they had no chance of winning. I think most polls had the race dead even at the time.
