Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is preparing to meet with Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference later this week after confirming on Friday he is ready to "do a deal" with President Donald Trump.

According to an interview with Reuters, Zelenskyy said he was ready to supply the U.S. with rare-earth minerals in exchange for Washington’s continued backing of its war effort.

"If we are talking about a deal, then let's do a deal, we are only for it," Zelenskyy said.

A political agreement in accordance with the principles of the Helsinki Accords, the memorandum included security assurances against the threat or use of force against Ukraine’s territory or political independence. The countries promised to respect the sovereignty and existing borders of Ukraine.

2009 Joint Declaration by Russia and the United States

Russia and the United States released a joint statement in 2009 confirming that the security assurances made in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum would still be valid after START expired in 2009.

First, my friend, “negotiations” don’t mean that there will be a “deal.” And if there is a deal, that doesn’t mean that it entails more war. Indeed, the deal may result in the end of the war.

Secondly, as much as many of us may disdain Zelensky, that doesn’t translate into any expectation that Putin should (or will) prevail. Fuck him. He’s a scumbag of the highest order.

It’s a thorny work issue. But I suspect that any deal negotiated with Trump’s help will both end the war and the killing and maybe leave much of Ukraine intact.

There may be no safe way to avoid Putin “winning” a partial victory. But nothing is settled, yet.
