‘God, Come to Our Aid’: Survivors Describe Mexico Plane Crash

As the plane began its ascent, Father Sanchez noticed from his window seat, 1D, that the visibility had gone to zero. Then the plane plunged. The passengers screamed.

He was not certain they were going to die, he recalled, but he was “getting ready for it.”

He silently prayed: “God, come to our aid. Secondly, forgive us, and everyone on the plane.”

Strong wind and heavy rain with marble-sized hail lashed Durango city, even damaging hangars at the airport. "It fell where the tarmac ended and that is what caused the fire, as well as serious damage to the plane", Aispuro said to Mexican broadcaster Televisa. The jetliner crashed while taking off during a severe storm, smacking down in a field almost intact then catching fire, and officials said it appeared everyone on board escaped the flames.

Airline reports plane accident in Durango, Mexico

Comments on social media sites and local news reports praised (Captain) Mr. Galván’s conduct as “heroic,” contending that his apt maneuvering prevented a tragedy.

‘God, Come to Our Aid’: Survivors Describe Mexico Plane Crash

His "apt" decision to takeoff during a severe storm may have had just a wee bit to do with the accident.

Note to self: Next time there's strong wind, heavy rain and heavy hail--strong enough to damage buildings, it just might be a good idea to delay your departure Captain.

In their culture, this guy will fly again and be hailed a hero.
(Sorry, couldn't resist the pun).

Their (aviation) culture is like ours was 50 years ago--the Captain is the ultimate authority. His call cannot be questioned. The Copilot rides along no matter what. That culture caused a lot of deaths and destruction of expensive property so we changed our way$$$.

In our current (aviation) culture, the Copilot would have stopped the Captain from making this decision to takeoff in a severe storm.

Severe wind, rain and hail. No doubt of wind shear.

U.S., Canadian, British, Australian, New Zealand cockpit:

Captain: "Let's go. Got to make the schedule."

Copilot: "My jet."

Company: Captain fired after extensive drug/alcohol/psychiatric testing.

Passengers: Safe.

Crew: Safe.

Aircraft: Safe'ish. (Possible hail damage).

'Black box' recorders found from downed Aeromexico plane
Aug. 2,`18 (UPI) -- Investigators have found both the flight data and cockpit voice recorders from the Aeromexico jetliner that crashed this week with more than 100 people aboard.
The Brazilian-made Embraer 190 crashed Tuesday after taking off in Durango en route to Mexico City. Luis Gerardo Fonseca, director of Mexico's civil aviation agency, confirmed on Wednesday the recorders were found. The "black box" recorders help investigators piece together what happened leading up to the crash, including conversations of pilots, speed, altitude, vertical acceleration and fuel flow. The investigation is being led by Mexican officials, who are getting help from Brazil, where the jet was built, and the United States, where its engines were made.

An Aeromexico flight that crashed Tuesday is being investigated by Mexican and U.S. authorities. Officials said they have located the black boxes from the wreckage.
Officials say it's too early to say exactly what caused the crash, but Durango Gov. José R. Aispuro Torres said Wednesday strong winds may have played a factor. There were 97 passengers and four crew members aboard the flight. Two were injured critically, including the pilot, who had spinal surgery but is in stable condition, and a young girl who sustained burns. Airline crash investigations take months to piece together but determining the cause of this crash could be made easier because the location allows for easy access to evidence. Investigators on this crash also will be able to interview passengers and crew.

U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration are assisting with the investigation. The U.S. State Department said at least 65 U.S. citizens were on board, and Aeromexico tweeted Wednesday 64 had been released from hospitals. A passenger aboard the jetliner captured video of the accident.
