Michigan woman charged in drunken crash that killed 2 siblings at birthday party

A Michigan woman has been charged with second-degree murder for crashing her vehicle into a birthday party, killing two young siblings and injuring multiple people, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Marshella Marie Chidester, 66, was taken into custody Saturday evening. Authorities said she was drunk when she plowed her SUV into a boat club in Monroe County, just south of Detroit.

The Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township was hosting a child’s birthday party. Two kids, an 8-year-old girl and her 4-year-old brother, were killed in the crash.

Their older sibling, an 11-year-old boy, survived but is still hospitalized. He suffered fractures to his skull, ribs and both of his legs, according to the Detroit Free Press.

More than a dozen people were also injured. The kids’ mother suffered serious injuries and had to be hospitalized, according to Prosecuting Attorney Jeffery Yorkey.

During her arraignment on Tuesday, Chidester expressed no reaction as Judge Christian Horkey read all the charges against her: two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, and four counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injuries.

Universal background checks for alcohol. All owners must lock away alcohol in special alcohol safes. Alcohol manufacturers should be sued for all alcohol related deaths. Ten day waiting periods for alcohol purchases. No large capacity alcohol bottles. No private transfers of alcoholic beverages. All privately owned alcohol must be registered with the ATF.

One of the easiest crimes to get away with, with the lightest sentence you can be given for a crime of this magnitude, is hitting a pedestrian or bicyclist or motorcycle rider with your car and killing them, provided you are sober at the time.

The only justice you can get is financial. This woman was drunk, she is toast. Michigan recently held a murderers parents responsible, and they will put the hammer down on her.

Folks tend to say a lot, myself included. She claims to have had only one drink and an epileptic seizure. This is why courts and deliberating juries of peers exist. What was her blood alcohol reading? All pretty meaningless speculation without that sort of basic information.

I can't remember if the incident was here in Washington state or not but a Tesla owner ran over a motorcyclist while the vehicle was in self-driving mode. The way the story was reported however I found strange. They said that the "driver" relayed to the first responders upon their arrival that the motorcyclist was under his vehicle.

Maybe it's remnants of seeing all of those good Samaritans pull a different driver out of his burning vehicle this past weekend or maybe it's just that trying to move the vehicle off of him could have possibly injured the cyclist worse (he died) but I didn't get why nothing was done by the inattentive driver to try to render aid to the person he ran over.

That is the harshest sentence I've ever seen for hitting and killing a cyclist(s). I know of a couple near me who were killed while riding and the motorist was not arrested, one of them changed his story, intially saying he had a flat tire, then changing his story to not seeing him at night, and was never charged. It took years of lobbying for Illinois to finally pass a law that gives cyclists three feet that motorists must give cyclists. Not sure this law has done anything other than give victims families more leverage in a wrongful death lawsuit.

The Los Angeles Police Department arrested Elliot Tramel Nowden. The homeless 45-year-old is charged with murder and is being held on $2 million bail, authorities said.

According to LAPD, Nowden stabbed the victim in the throat using two small kitchen knives. The woman got off the train while bleeding profusely at the station, and Nowden exited right after.

He fled the scene, but a combination of surveillance cameras and witness descriptions about the suspect and his distinctive clothing helped officers locate and arrest him a short time later near Ventura Boulevard and Vineland Avenue

In other news, just the other day, experts report that a Missouri woman slipped on a banana peel carelessly left on a kitchen floor by her demented husband. She apparently died instantly so no charges were filed. The peel is suing a local news site for libel.

P.S. Since her victims were all kids, I can't see her lasting long in there once the other lifers get wind of why she was put away.
