A bit of a show and maybe even a little static on communications.

Northern lights could spread across the U.S. this weekend

A strong geomagnetic storm could bring aurora as far south as Oregon and Illinois in the United States.
October 3, 2024

The sun is sending a slew of activity to Earth this week — and that could mean strong displays of the aurora, also known as the northern and southern lights.

For prime northern lights viewing in the United States, activity is expected Friday through Sunday, per Thursday’s forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Clouds will be generally clear on both nights to provide good vantages for the majority of the country.

Auroras are created when explosions of energy and particles from the sun temporarily disturb the protective magnetic bubble around Earth, creating a geomagnetic storm. They can appear as undulating curtains of light or diffuse glows in green, red, purple and pink, sometimes lasting for hours.

Forecasters anticipate a “strong” geomagnetic storm later on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, ranked a 3 out of 5 on the severity scale from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. The forecast could change as more data is evaluated.

This graphic shows where the aurora may be visible down by eye down to the red line for Saturday night for a "strong" (G3) geomagnetic storm, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Some areas farther south may see the aurora, especially with cameras and camcorders. (NOAA)
During such strong geomagnetic storms, people as far south as Illinois and Oregon have been able to see auroras with their naked eyes. However, people even farther south can often capture the light show on their cameras or phones...
