(CNN) -- One student was killed at the hands of a shooter at a high school near Portland, Oregon, on Tuesday morning, police agencies said.

The suspected shooter is also dead, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said. It was not immediately clear how the shooter died.

There was only one shooter involved in the incident, police said.

About an hour after the shooting, Oregon State Police said the area was secure and the situation was contained.

The shooting happened at about 8 a.m. (11 a.m. ET) at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, about 12 miles east of Portland, said Sue Strickland of the Troutdale Police Department.

A semiautomatic weapon was involved in the shooting, she said.

"Today is a very tragic day for the city of Troutdale and Reynolds School District," Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson said.

Classes were in session at the time, Strickland said. It wasn't clear how many people were injured, and details about what led to the shooting weren't immediately available.

A couple of SWAT teams responded, Strickland said.

Anxious parents waited for news that their children were safe. One couple, Craig Tuholski and Tawnjia Reimer, were talking with CNN affiliate KGW, about how agonizing the wait for news was, when Tuholski's cell phone rang.

"Is that Chris?" Reimer asked before letting out a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank God."

"That's what we were waiting for," Tuholski said after hanging up.

Troutdale has a population of about 16,400, according to the Census Bureau.

"My thoughts and prayers are with students, staff and the Reynolds High School community during this difficult time," Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber said via Twitter.

CNN first learned of the shooting through reports on Twitter.

Quick be the first to bash the NRA and call for the ban of assault rifles before you find out the teen was deranged!!

All the gun control they can come up with will not stop this.

We need to get back to actual parenting like it was before.
We need to stop putting these kids on mind altering drugs.
When they started doing this is when these kids started murdering more often.

Damn another MASSSSSSSS murder! Has anyone heard what party the minor who could not sign up to vote belonged to? Or heard what brand of assault rifle he used and the brand of assault rifle he used and the brand of assault rifle he used?

I worked in federal law enforcement for a total of 14 years, and served in both Desert Storm and the Iraq War. I hold a degree in homeland security and completed two academies at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
Following the Sandy Hook shooting I submitted a suggestion to the mayor of my town for a way to secure the town's schools against this type of violence. His response was there is no way to prevent this threat if a person has the desire to attack unarmed people.
There is no way to remove firearms from the equation. Even if radical firearms laws were passed, there are millions of guns in America that can never be seized or removed from circulation. Criminals will always have a ready supply of guns, and have no worry or concern about prosecution. Think about it. If someone is bent on breaking the law do they really have a fear of being caught with a gun. On the contrary. They will feel less threatened knowing honest people have given up their rights.
One of the Nevada shooting victims was a lawfully armed citizen. How many lives were saved by this man standing up to the threat? People escaped the Wal-Mart store because this man was willing to use his ability respond to two criminals. He was killed only because he was out numbered. While he was drawing fire customers were given time to flee.
I have spent many weeks in Israel where military firearms are in the hands of citizen soldiers going about their daily business. Young people who are traveling to and from points of duty to their homes, to shops and to restaurants freely carry arms and there is very little crime, and no gun violence that I am aware of.
The answer is to provide the administration and staff of facilities, including schools the means to keep unauthorized people out, and to use the required level of force to defend those in their charge. This includes fortification, and yes training, qualifying and arming those in a position to make a difference.
I consider myself a moderate, and a person who has the education and experience to provide accurate information and solutions for this problem. The government needs to stop politicizing this issue and place authority in the hands of those in a position to defend those who need defending.
