The remains of at least 200 mammoths have been recovered at an airport construction site north of Mexico City. There are more skeletons to be excavated. The site of Mexico City is known as the "Mammoth Central",is now the largest collection of extinct mammoths in the world. The discovery of the site is still in progress, and there are signs that humans may have been tools made from the bones of forest animals that died 10,000 to 20,000 years ago.

Because there are so many mammoths bones at the site, observers have to accompany each bulldozer to ensure that work would stop once the bones were excavated. In addition to the skeletons of mammoths, they also found the remains of extinct camels and horses. Archaeologist said that evidence is emerging that the remains of the mammoths that died at the site may have been carved up by humans. While tests are still being carried out on the mammoth bones to try to find possible butchering marks, experts have found dozens of mammoth-bone tools like the ones in Tultepec. The site is just 12 miles from the artificial pits, which are basically shallow mammoth traps dug by early inhabitants to trap and kill dozens of mammoths.
