This transgenic lamb, bred at the Animal Reproduction Institute Uruguay (IRAUy), has an incorporated gene that makes it glow under ultraviolet light, according to scientists there. The photo, released on April 24, is evidence of the first transgenic lamb produced in Latin America, the institute said.

Despair

Two days after the collapse of an eight-story textile factory in Bangladesh killed and buried hundreds of workers under its ruins, mass protests broke out in Dhaka on April 26. Hundreds of thousands of garment workers demonstrated against their dismal working conditions. The incident has stirred a heated debate about the lack of safety in many factories in the developing world and put international retailers relying on low-wage production in these countries under scrutiny.

As Serbia seeks EU membership, it is facing a major problem with environmental pollution. Many international mining companies are moving their operations to countries where infrastructure is more advanced and political risks are comparatively low

The fair is the world's most important commercial event for contemporary art. It will be open to the public from June 13 to 16. With additional annual art shows in Miami Beach and Hong Kong, Art Basel has become a global art world brand.

Some are better than others!

Nasty Girl, Germany's Prettiest Cow

image-508601-galleryV9-fblc.jpg

Though "Lady Gaga," "Madonna" and "Grace" all did their best, they were no match for "Loh Nastygirl." The dappled beauty wowed the judges to be named Grand Champion at the 2013 German Holstein Show in Oldenburg on Thursday.

"She has many strengths, from the rear to the front," judge Marko Radke told news agency DPA. Selected for her well-formed udder, strong legs and plump belly, the voluptuous bovine competed against 250 other cows from across the country.

Backstage before the competition there was reportedly a flurry of washing, trimming, blow drying and hairspraying among the competitors, but in the end, 6-year-old "Nastygirl" and her handler Thomas Schulte-Lohmöller emerged victorious. Moo.

[I loved on a ranch/farm during high screwel and we had two milk cows - on a Holstein like this. She gave lots and lots of milk and was easy to milk - except - she loved to try to step on my foot!]

G8 Fakes

image-509711-galleryV9-ndby.jpg

A woman walks past a derelict shop, its windows covered in giant posters to make it look like a deli, in Fivemiletown, Northern Ireland. Around 300,000 pounds (about €353,300) of government funds have been invested in sprucing up more than 100 properties in the Northern Ireland county of Fermanagh, which is hosting the international G8 economic summit from June 17-18. But the use of window-sized posters to hide the economic decay that is widespread in the area has drawn heavy criticism from locals.

This is truly sad to see.

She's not even close! The teats are too small, meaning it'll be another 6 hours before she's ready.

Pole Dance

image-504152-galleryV9-ljct.jpg

Artists have reimagined a power pylon as an electrified dancing silhouette for a summer exhibition in Germany's Ruhr region. Through an optical illusion the art work "Zauberlehrling" (sorcerer's apprentice), by the art collective Inges Idee, seems to dance as the viewer approaches. The piece is part of the second edition of the Emscherkunst exhibition series, which bills itself as the world's largest outdoor art show. The event stretches out over a 50-square-meter (538-square-foot) plot along the banks of the Emscher River and will include works by big-name artists, including Ai Weiwei, Tomás Saraceno and Daniel Buren. In the 1970s, the Emscher River was one of Germany's most polluted. Following extensive renaturalization procedures, the area is now one of the region's biggest attractions

Cooling Off

The summer has finally begun in Germany. With temperatures soaring above 30 degrees Celsius all across the country, a cold shower comes as welcome surprise. This obliging elephant at the Hanover Zoo won dozens of new friends on Wednesday with a cooling blast from his trunk.

Up the Waterspout
image-511325-galleryV9-thxy.jpg

When a tornado forms over a body of water, a waterspout occurs. High layers of cool air blow across the water as warm, moist air sweeps up from below. This results in a thin, dense columnar vortex that sucks up water into a giant mushroom-shaped spray. This particularly impressive waterspout was photographed by "Buggie" Vegas, owner of Bridge Side Cabins and Marina in Grand Isle, Louisiana, on June 19. According the United States' National Weather Service, the waterspout did little damage.
