Popular hits of the 1950's.

OK, THIS is interesting. Hank's backup band WAS known as THE Midnighters. However, there was a band from East LA, Thee Midniters, who were one of the first Chicano rock bands to have a major hit in the US. Their cover of "Land of a Thousand Dances" was a hit in 1964. I'm so glad I looked this up, it would've been bugging me all night! And I certainly must have read about them in a book about the history of rock and roll.
Hank Ballard's Midnighters were original called the Royals, but changed their name to avoid being confused by a band with a similar name. That I stumbled upon when looking up whether it was "the" or "thee" Midnighters.

I just thought of another one of my favorites from the 1950's, "Be-Bop-A-Lula", by Gene Vincent. John Lennon recorded a very nice cover of this song in 1975, on his album Rock and Roll. It was his tribute album to those who had come before him on the music scene, and influenced HIS music. This album generally gets a bad rap, but I think it's quite good.
