...Why isn't his word the end of any given theological question? Why does Christianity so often defer to Paul or other writers of the New Testament gospels? Further in the bolded section below, Jesus contradicts Jewish law (God's word in effect) so why does he do that if he and God are the same person, or same authority?

Reading something just now this question occured?

"Matthew 19:9 states similarly:

"And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery." (KJV)

Here, Jesus prohibits divorce, except in a case of sexual misconduct -- "porneia" in the original Greek. Various versions of the Bible have translated "porneia" as as adultery, fornication, unchastity, unfaithfulness or marital unfaithfulness. Jesus here deviated from Jewish law, which said that a man could freely divorce his wife.

Mark 10:11-12 states:

"...Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

Luke 16:18 states:

"Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery."

These gospel writers record Jesus as having taken a different stance on divorce. He said that it is unacceptable for any reason at all. "

Shhhhh, you are not allowed to have common sense and ask such rational question, didn't you eat the wafers made with labotomy syrum and drink it down with brain cell destroying wine? { 8- p

because the Sermon on the Mount was not intended to change the law but to make people understand that becoming "righteous" through the law was humanly impossible.......Jesus was telling people they would never be righteous on their own because they could not avoid looking at a woman with lust in their heart, could not love their enemies, could not give a thief their coat, could not turn the other cheek........

unbelievers want to criticize Christians saying "look, you are not as good as Christ said you should be" when in truth we are simply being what Christ said everyone is, sinners in need of his grace......

Yes. Jesus raised the bar on the Law. The Law governed actions, Jesus takes on attitudes and the heart. The Law said that killing someone was wrong. Jesus raised the bar and said hating was wrong. The Law said adultery was wrong. Jesus said lusting was wrong. And on it goes. Gee, it's almost like He knew it would be impossible for us to be completely righteous on our own and we would need grace we couldn't earn....

The problems with errors, omissions and falsehoods plague all of the holy texts. That's because they are all written by fallible humans. Religionists insist that their various gods are one of many "Omni's" and perfect (how perfection creates something less than perfection-- existence-- is always unanswered).

Yes. Jesus raised the bar on the Law. .
no....he came to tell us the pharisees and saducees had put the bar in the wrong place.....

God commands and revokes according to his pleasure.

his word is the end of discussion.

No it's not. It's answered very early on the Bible. Read it.

uh, no.....that's why the text from the Sermon on the Mount says "you have heard it said........but I say unto you......" he wasn't quoting anyone.......

And what He cited was in the Law.

to claim so insures that you miss the point of what he was saying.....

Not so. It's very clear what He was saying. He quoted sections of the Law (unless you can prove what He said was not in there, good luck on that), and gave His standard, which was higher in each case.

easy enough......if His standard "was higher in each case", then "what He said was not in there".....is this not true?.....how could his standard be higher than the law if it was in the law?.....

Maybe Jewish law isn't Gods law?

Each time He said, "You have heard it is written", it was in the Law. His standard is higher because He came to fulfill the Law and bring us into relationship.
