Of course great money wins great sympathy and allows for well-educated Saudis to adopt many “facades” of Western culture. The children of elite Saudis have for a few generations already graduated from Harvard and Cambridge & other Western institutions. The violent and backward Saudi state itself has been a weird, mostly dependent but increasingly undependable ally of the U.S.A. in the oil-rich Middle East. As rich as it is, Saudi practices, social norms, and treatment of immigrants … can never be a model for our kind of society.

Americans can and should be proud that we remain still a very different kind of society than even the most progressive Gulf Oil Sheikdoms. We rightly don’t allow for the murdering of desperate illegal immigrants.

On the other hand, we can do a much better job of handling legal and illegal immigration to our own country than we have done in recent decades — but that is another issue altogether.
