Today it was reported that Israeli jets struck a convoy headed from Syria to Lebanon. The convoy reportedly contained SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles as well as some of the SSRC’s special toxic brew.

Syria’s extended occupation of Lebanon has come to an end, but the Shiite terrorist group Hezbollah, backed by Iran and Syria, has taken its place. Hezbollah fighters have gone to Syria to fight for Assad and it was widely speculated that Assad might transfer some of his WMD stockpiles to his Lebanese allies.

For Israel, the transfer of WMDs to terrorists is the ultimate red line that endangers its survival and existence. Israel’s enemies have long used neighboring terrorist groups as proxy armies for waging war against it by conventional means. Transferring WMDs to terrorists would allow those same countries to indirectly carry out a WMD attack that might kill hundreds of thousands of Israelis while minimizing concerns about retaliation.

Israel strikes Syrian anti-aircraft missile shipment meant for Hezbollah...

Report: Israel notified US of Syria strike
1.31.13, Israeli attack targeted shipment of sophisticated antiaircraft missiles meant for Hezbollah, US papers say
While both Jerusalem and Washington refrained from commenting on reports of an Israeli strike deep inside Syrian territory, major newspapers in the United States continued to reveal new details about the alleged operation. American officials told the New York Times Wednesday that Israel informed the US about the attack, which the sources believe targeted a convoy of trucks carrying sophisticated antiaircraft weaponry meant for Hezbollah in Lebanon.

One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the newspaper that the convoy that was attacked on the outskirts of Damascus was transporting SA-17 antiaircraft weapons that could cut into Israel's ability to fly reconnaissance flights over Lebanon. Sources speaking to The Wall Street Journal reiterated the preliminary assertion that a shipment of antiaircraft missiles was bombed, even though Syria maintained that such accounts were wrong. Instead, Syria's military said, Israeli jets had attacked a military facility near Damascus.

But US officials told the WSJ the reports of two targets – the arms convoy and the military site – we're not mutually exclusive. The Hezbollah-bound trucks may have been close to a military facility, they said, cautioning their information is incomplete. The US State Department and Defense Department would not comment on reports of the strike by Israel, whose Military Intelligence Chief Aviv Kochavi is currently in Washington for talks with top US general Martin Dempsey. "I'd refer you to the government of Israel for questions about deliberations or actions that they may or may not have taken," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday.

Hezbollah condemns Israel's raid on Syria
Jan 31,`13 -- Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group has condemned Israel's air raid on Syria, saying it targeted a "scientific research center."
The Thursday statement said Hezbollah "expresses full solidarity with Syria's command, army and people," and called the strike "barbaric aggression".

U.S. officials said Israel launched a rare airstrike inside Syria Wednesday, targeting a convoy believed to contain anti-aircraft weapons bound for Hezbollah.

The Syrian military denied the existence of any such shipment and said a scientific research facility outside Damascus was hit by the Israeli warplanes.

Hezbollah did not mention any convoy in the statement but said the strike aimed to prevent Arab and Muslim forces from developing their military capabilities.
