Something has bothered me with most of the discussions concerning Trump sending someone off to a prison while disregarding their civil rights. (Yes he did this and I will not argue anything otherwise).
The arguments go, once you allow due process to be stripped from one, it becomes easier to then do it to others. What bothers me is that ship has longed sailed.
It became public knowledge that Obama had targeted Al-Awlaki to be killed when found. He had people arguing that he had never received any Due Process and therefor could not have a sentence against him. No, he wasn't here but he most certainly could have been tried in absentia just like we did with Ira Einhorn.

Even a military trial would have while keeping any classified information, classified it would have put the governments proof on record.
We got nothing but a citizen targeted for death by a president based upon nothing more than the word of the president that he was a bad guy. Just like people are arguing today. The argument is the same, bad guy or not as a citizen he had due process rights.
Where were the complaints and condemnation of Obama? There were a small few. The ACLU and a small number of civil liberty groups. The Democrats? Unlike today they backed Obama. Republicans? Nothing because they supported it.

Trump is a horrible person and president but the ground work was laid by Obama.
We can then mention how Obama then targeted his teen age son much like what we saw in the Godfather II.
