The probably not-so-mysterious 'alien tech star' thing

Mysterious star stirs controversy in astronomy world - Sunday Times

This whole thing reminds me of the discovery of gamma ray bursters. First detected by satellites designed to monitor nuclear weapons tests, there was buzz it might be alien weapons of mass destruction. But of course it wasn't. I think we're going to discover a mundane explanation here as well.

For an even better illustration of the probably mundane nature here, I'll use a "Red Dwarf" sci-fi series reference.

Lister: "That's your explanation for anything slightly peculiar isn't it? 'Aliens.' A picture falls off the wall, it's aliens. You lose your car keys, it's aliens. That timwe used a whole bog roll in a day, that was aliens as well."

Rimmer: "Well we didn't use it all Lister. Who did?"

Lister: "Aliens used our bog roll?"

Rimmer: "Just because they're aliens doesn't mean they don't have to use the little boys room. Only they probably do something weird and alienesque, like it comes out on top of their heads or something."

Lister: "I wouldn't like to be stuck behind one in the cinema!"
