Terrible idea. Like welfare, it will encourage poor people to have more kids. Esp people in the "protected classes."

april 22 2025 President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the idea of a "baby bonus" as a means to jump-start birth rates in the United States "sounds like a good idea to me."

Trump's answer to a question posed in the Oval Office came amid a New York Times report Monday that said the White House has been brainstorming ideas to reverse the country's declining birth rate.

One called for a $5,000 "baby bonus," which Trump responded to. Another proposal would see 30% of Fulbright scholarships reserved for applicants who are married or have children. Yet another would fund programs to educate women about menstrual cycles, the Times reported.

Birth rates in the U.S. have been declining since 2007 and fell to 3.6 million in 2023, down 2% from 2022, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

Not only that, but since $5000 doesn't go far at all when it comes to raising kids, those poor young people will next want welfare.

I'm speculating on what I'm about to say, but I wouldn't be surprised if this idea is about conditioning people to accept UBI...which Elon Musk has stated is going to happen in the future, he said it's inevitable. And the powers-that-shouldn't-be have been promoting it and conditioning people to accept it, in numerous ways.

It beats the hell out of the Biden plan to buy votes by paying off student loan debit.
Sure because people burdened by six figure debt they struggle to pay are the ones having 6 kids, not the welfare class already getting more than 2 times more transfer payments per year than the total student loan debt.

I actually like the idea except I would simply alter it to only apply to people making at least X times so much money over at least the past five years to qualify.

That is all you need to do.

Given that having a baby in the USA costs more than $32,000 just for a simple vaginal birth, without insurance, this will do NOTHING to encourage poor women to have babies.

Even with insurance, parents are paying $20,000 out of pocket to have a baby. In Canada, hospitals and doctors for a hospital delivery are $0. Zip, NADA, and our birth rate is lower than yours. It's the costs of raising a child, which are crippling families.

"My experience is pretty typical for an American mom. Different studies report different figures but in general, people with employer-provided health insurance in the US are charged about $20,000 to have a baby (more if they need a C-section) and incur somewhere between $2,600 and $4,500 in out-of-pocket costs. Birth complications, or if a baby spends time in the NICU, can drive prices up even higher.:
