I think the problem is how broad "conservative" and "liberal" are. Some of us look for ideological differences: constitutionally limited government vs the ubiquitous state, free markets vs socialism, individual rights vs identity politics. But that kind of distinction has mostly evaporated. Trump Republicans and Democrats agree on basics. They're all in on the culture war and see the government as a tool to dictate social norms, to tell us the right way to live and make sure we abide. Neither has a problem with intrusive government, they just want to be in control of the intrusions.A fiscal & constitutional conservative. That's all I'll vote for, because it's all I support.
