"JAKARTA, Indonesia — The United States deployed aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson to patrol the increasingly contentious South China Sea on Saturday despite Beijing’s warnings not to challenge its sovereignty in the resource-rich sea.

In a statement, the Navy described the launch as the beginning of “routine operations” in the South China Sea. China claims most of the sea as its own, despite overlapping territorial and jurisdictional claims from the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

On Wednesday, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang denounced advance news of the deployment at a news conference.

“China has indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their adjacent waters,” he said. “China respects and upholds the freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea which countries enjoy under international law, but firmly opposes any country's attempt to undermine China's sovereignty and security in the name of the freedom of navigation and overflight”

Between this and our Troops on the Russian border. None of this is good.

Sending thousands of US troops to the Russian border and urging nations along that border to deploy troops to the border was a foolish provocation that will only serve to make a difficult situation more difficult. Russia has legitimate security concerns about western influence in these border states, which the US has refused to acknowledge since Bill Clinton took office, and this move only exacerbated these concerns.

China's expansion in the Pacific, on the other hand, is not about security concerns but about greed, and the US has important allies in the region who are in conflict with China on this issue, so sooner or later the US will be drawn into the dispute. Perhaps a US show of force as a sign of our commitment to our allies will make China more amenable to negotiations with other nations in the region.

On the other hand, not challenging China's aggressive expansion into the Pacific could be bad news.

But China could get angry for that? Maybe USA and China should talk before using their armies :(

They have been talking but China has unwilling to compromise on anything. Perhaps this display of US commitment to its regional allies will persuade China to compromise.

. John MCcain and Lindsey Graham have become dangerous officials in these situations all due their hatred of Trump. They are operating outside the norms of their duties to their office, and for the security of the United States. They should be held accountable for their rehtoric and actions. This has been transparent since the election of Trump, and it could serve to undermine Trump, and in the process to undermine the security of this nation.

Hi Esther! :eusa_angel:

Nobody knows better than the Vietnamese what a predator China is. We are showing them they are trying to block a trade route that's been open to all for hundreds of years and will stay that way. As full of swagger and bluster as they are, they know better than to challenge us there. Trump has already gotten China to do his bidding by refusing to buy any more coal from N. Korea while they're firing missiles into the sea. Don't worry about China or us leaving the TPP....we'll continue trading with your country without others telling us how or how much.
