I can only speak for Los Angeles County.

In LA, poll workers are explicitly forbidden from asking for ID.

And if someone presents it voluntarily, they're told not to look at it and ask them politely to put it away.

The first election that I ever voted was in CA in 1972 and I offered my ID. I was told the same thing then. I asked how they verified and the poll worker just shook her head and stated, "I've wondered the same thing."
