Where Was God When Israel Deported African Refugees?

How should religious institutions respond when the regimes that rule the territories they inhabit incite racism and carry out ethnic cleanings?

Seventy-five years after Pius XII became pontiff on the eve of World War Two, his successor Francis is still wrestling with this question. In an interview last week with La Vanguardia following a visit to Israel, the reigning pope admitted that Pius made mistakes, but defended his record, as well. Although the wartime pope didn't speak out against anti-Semitic crimes committed by the fascists, he did hide dozens of Jewish babies from them, Francis insisted, and holding his tongue may have saved the lives of those infants. Was that enough?

In Israel itself, the question of how institutions of faith should respond to a state-sponsored drive for racial-religious purity is also of great relevance today.

While it is Palestinian Christians and Muslims who have traditionally borne the brunt of efforts to Judaize, or de-Gentile-ize the country, another ethnic out-group has competed with them in recent years for the wrath of Israeli ultra-nationalists: African asylum-seekers. After 60,000 sub-Saharan Africans, Christian and Muslim, sought refuge in Israel from political persecution and ethnic cleansing, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a multi-pronged campaign to expel them all.

There is nothing wrong with any country anywhere enforcing their borders and immigration laws.

You're insane. If you want your country to be flooded with refugees, go ahead.

NIMBY.

See, there's the irony.
jews want to protect their heritage, culture borders, etc....so they build concentration camps for illegal refugees where they can hold them until they ship them back....but jew politicians in america want just the opposite for our country.

Israel keeps them in southenr 'camp' when they're all well fed and in one community. I don't see the problem.

Free food and free shelter, yet they still find a way to trash Israel.

PaliNazis= deluded people

By contrast - the US government refused to take in refugees from Hitler's Germany, and then there was the little matter of 'camps' for US citizens of Japanese origin - while the Bundists had free rein on the East Coast.

And speaking of 'land theft' - there was plenty of that going on while the Japanese-Americans were in those camps.

Not to mention the infamous Arab League cabal to beggar and eject their entire Jewish citizenry en masse..... of which the writer evidently is ALSO ignorant.

I found it most difficult to sniff out the author's 'point' through the reek of all that hypocrisy.

God? You see how Right wing christian America voted on feed the poor and heal the sick right? They cut those programs. Somehow politics/government trumps god. From thou shall not murder to lets invade Iraq for their oil and so Haloburton can bankrupt the American tax payers.

Money trumps god even with christians.

Do tiy think that Pbel was worried about the 50,000 Ethiopians who were deported back to their poor country not to long ago? He can't blame it on the Jews so his eyes were closed.

You like the idea of concentration camps for your cultural enemies. Interesting.

cultural enemies? WTF is that?

And "concentration camps"? sure, sure; It's better shooting them on the spot, like in Arab countries.

Israel feeds, dresses and protects them, and here come around whiney bitches and complain about every single thing Israel does, because it suits their agendas.

Frankly, I'm out of fucks to give.

Why didn't these Blacks just stop in Muslim countries to look for jobs? Funny how the fact that the Egyptians shot many in the back while they were trying to get into Israel seems to escape some of the posters.

Just recently there was a story of how many Hispanic children are being kept for deportation as they have crossed the border illegally on their own. I guess it is more important though for some posters to blame Israel for what is happening to these Black illegals.

Not refugees but illegal immigrants and as such should have been kicked out well before now. But you don't see it this way do you.

50,000 of the 50 million people in the world that have been displaced.

A five-metre-high fence constructed by Israel to curb the flow of African migrants was completed in December and has reduced the number of people crossing illegally from 10,000 in 2012 to fewer than 45 last year.

In February 25, 2014 Israel has began deporting African asylum seekers from Sudan and Eritrea to Uganda. The pocket money to help them get started elsewhere was an incentive for them to leave voluntarily.

They risked everything to get our of their country and to reach Israel. They got food, water, clothing, medical care, shelter, and now a plane ride to Uganda and money to help them till they can find homes and jobs to support their family.
