Which countries have an "Official Language" codified into their laws?

The United States was built on immigration.
Migrants from around the world with their own languages.

These migrants eventually learn English or at least their children do

Making English your official language does not mean you can force the woman behind you at the checkout line to speak English.

It means the Government will not publish official documents in other languages
It depends. They may also establish, say, forced anglofication policy, incuding, as in Ukraine, "language patrols" to arrest people speaking other languages and breaking the windows in the shops with foreign banners.

What exactly would change by making English the official language?

Countries designate official languages primarily to facilitate effective communication within the government and with citizens, promote national unity by providing a common language for public discourse, and sometimes to recognize and protect the languages of minority groups within a diverse population; this can also strengthen international ties when the official language is widely spoken globally.

Key points about official languages:
  • Communication and Governance:
Having an official language allows for clear communication between the government and its citizens, ensuring everyone can access important information and services.
  • National Unity:
A common language can foster a sense of shared identity and belonging within a country, especially when there are diverse ethnic groups.

  • Education and Access:
Official languages are often used in the education system, providing a consistent means of learning for all citizens.
  • Cultural Preservation:
In some cases, designating a minority language as official can help preserve cultural heritage and promote inclusivity.
  • International Relations:
When a country's official language is widely spoken globally, it can facilitate diplomatic and economic interactions.

What exactly would change by making English the official language?
In practical terms English is already the official language of the USA. Codification of this fact, highly likely, will demand official codification of American English, and, say, official demand of studying it in schools.
In hard scenario there will be ban of official usage of other languages, breaking windows in stores with non-Englist banners, ban on production and public reproduction of non-American content and so on ..

People wearing MAGA hats will scream at people speaking another language

Don’t you know we speak ENGLISH here?
Then call 911

First they'll scream. Later - they'll establish "language patrols" as in Ukraine, to arrest them.

It has been several days (weeks?) since I have read a rational libtard post.

That, along with not pressing 7 for Spanish, seem to bee their main fears.

So, you agree that it is a good thing?

English is the default “official language” of the world.
International business is conducted in English. People who learn a second language speak English.

Making English the official language will not force people to speak English.
What it will do is disenfranchise people who speak another language from getting official information from the government.
If they are not citizens, why are you catering to them? American citizens mist speak English. EOS.

Typical asshole conservative

This country was built by immigrants. Even those who speak some English may struggle with some complex documents.

Our government has traditionally printed official documents in other languages and had interpretors to speak the major languages of their community.

Trump says….Fuk You
That is called "enabling" in most circles.
