In the past few years, I have tried some free antivirus programs and ended up removing AVG and Avira after they started to mess with my system. After a while, I recently downloaded a free version of TrendMicro, which could not detect a virus. But Norton's Power Eraser finally did the trick. My browsers were acting weird with unwanted pop-ups and it was an explorer virus planted by some malicious software or apps I downloaded.

It depends on your needs. If you need something that’s small and runs fast, F-Secure Free Online Scanner may be the best online virus scan tool for you. If you need something that’s more like a Swiss Army knife and does a lot of things, EmsiSoft Emergency Kit is a good choice.

If you’re concerned about things on your network beyond your device, TrendMicro HouseCall will do the trick. The point is these options are all good and one of them will suit your needs.

I've used Avast ever since they came out and haven't had any problems, other than the constant badgering for me to upgrade to the pay version.

👉 There are several reputable free antimalware tools available online that can help you protect your system from malware threats. Here are a few recommendations:

1. Malwarebytes: Offers a free version that provides on-demand scanning and removal of malware. While the premium version includes real-time protection, the free version is effective for manual scans.

2. Avast Free Antivirus: This comprehensive tool provides real-time protection, along with features like a password manager and network security scanner. It’s suitable for everyday use.

3. Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition: Known for its robust malware detection capabilities, this lightweight antivirus offers essential protection with minimal system impact.

4. Emsisoft Emergency Kit: A portable solution that can be run from a USB drive, it allows you to scan and remove malware without installation.

5. Windows Defender: Built into Windows 10 and 11, it provides solid antivirus protection and is continuously updated with the latest threat definitions.

While these solutions are effective, combining them with safe browsing practices and regular updates to your operating system can significantly enhance your security. Always download software from official websites to avoid counterfeit versions that may contain malware.

👉 Virtual environment apps can help prevent malware by isolating potentially harmful applications or processes, creating a secure space for them to run without affecting the rest of the system. This isolation minimizes the risk of malware spreading or accessing sensitive data.

For Android:

1. Sandboxing Apps: Applications like Island or Shelter create a separate, isolated environment on your device. They allow you to run apps in a "work profile," which limits their access to your personal data.

2. Virtual Machines: Apps like VMOS allow you to run a full-fledged Android operating system within your device. This creates an isolated environment where you can install and test applications safely.

For Linux:

1. Docker: While primarily used for containerization in development, Docker can run applications in isolated containers. This setup prevents any malicious code from affecting the host system.

2. Firejail: A lightweight sandboxing tool for Linux that can restrict the access of applications to the system's resources, enhancing security without heavy overhead.

3. QEMU/KVM: For a full virtual machine solution, QEMU combined with KVM can run isolated instances of operating systems, providing a robust environment for testing potentially malicious software.

Using these tools helps mitigate risks associated with malware by creating controlled environments for software execution. :)

I don't use Facebook, Google, Instagram, porn sites.
Never have been blackmailed by online blackmailers, never get any spam e-mails.
Never had any problem with viruses, trojans etc.

I do not want some Vance mascara orange lipstick e-mails trying to fuck me.

FREE = you get what you pay for.

I have pay version of AVG. Never a problem.

After further consideration, I settled with AVG Free, which now comes with a secure browser. It's known that Avast and Avira keep installing themselves and the latter almost destroyed my system by doing that.

I use my own.

Why do you need it? I run Windows and it has its own built in security center:

I'm an experienced software designer too and work on my system for many hours every day and I never ever get a problem. I've worked and developed for Windows for decades and really never had a problem with viruses, so what the fuck are you doing exactly?

I survived ony with Windows Defender for a year. But something went wrong recently around the time when this forum got an upgrade. To reply to Litwin's threads, I often visit odd news sites based in non-English countries such as Russia and France. To do so, I need real-time protection, which is not Windows Defender's strong suit.
