As an Atheist, who has served in the military, we don't need a "chaplain." What we need is to not be forced to attend religious services while in recruit training and be ignored by the chaplains while in.

What the previous comment said... atheist can't go to a counselor as it might reflect on their record but they can go to a chaplain.. hence atheists want a chaplain so they can go talk out their problems... Humanist is declared a religion by the IRS...

My point on this is just change as the chaplain I saw describe his prior functions when he did see atheists... and as prior atheist pointed out don't have dogmatic chaplains.

Personally I don't understand why an atheist would be in the service since be definition atheist believe you die that's all there is...!
Me... I'm hedging my bet! I believe there is something after life and if I'm wrong..like the atheist I will never know! Right???
