Well, Putin is doing a lot of stuff, another cable got cut between two countries on either side of the Baltics, Russia again. It keeps attacking covertly and it keeps getting away with it.

But it's like anything else If you fry it down to the gristle what's left is tough and nearly impervious.

Because their economy has long been almost entirely internal. Not a lot of goods imported or exported, goods bought and sold are primarily made domestically for their own market.

Which is why their stores now resemble those of the Soviet era. Most exports cut off, so little cash available to buy goods from others. Most imports cut off, so the stores largely empty except for what they can make themselves.

It is tough and almost impervious. However, it is also extremely restricting. And unlike in the past this time the citizens are not happy after decades of exposure to such things. Unlike Khrushchev when he thought the US was lying when they said most families owned a car and such luxuries like washing machines in their homes. The modern Russians do indeed know that actually is the standard of living in most nations. Or like Boris Yeltsin when he visited the US in 1989.

He was shown a grocery store in the US, and he absolutely refused to believe that it was so well stocked with no lines to buy basic needs. He was positive it was a "Potemkin Village" that was only stocked for foreign visitors, and insisted that as they were traveling to another site they pull over into another grocery store he selected at random.

And he was shocked when it was just as well stocked as the first one was. And during his week long visit he visited multiple other grocery stores, from large chains to single owner stores. And all of them were fully stocked and without lines for basics like meat, bread, and toilet paper.

Russia has been able to experience that for several decades, but are once again back to where stores are empty. And if they have items, quantities are limited and lines to get them. Just as they were in the days of the Soviet Union.
