Have you read the 14th Amendment? It's worded pretty clearly and it doesn't mention slaves at all. Not even once you illiterate Bingo. It does say All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside. What's unclear about that? Don't projectect your Bingo education on to the rest of us. All those words are pretty clear to me. Do you need me to explain to you what All people means?

No one had to enter the country illegally, they just entered. Everyone here is a descendant of an immigrant.
It also says in the state they reside but when illegals cross the border they are not residing in a state.

Don't have to change it. We just need the Supreme Court to interpret it.

Which is the same thing, just you get around the rules for making the changes.

Just get the SCOTUS to change their mind about what it means and BOOM, the constitution is changed.

What fun the Left can have next time they have a majority on the court.

In the past, I've tacitly supported the policy for pretty cynical reasons - I assumed it would overload the welfare state and collapse it.

But if it would silence the border whiners, why not get rid of it? What good is it serving?

You have to examine the context of the time in which the amendment was written, they didn't have a crystal ball seeing hundreds of thousands of desperate people pouring into the country TAKING RESOURCES AWAY from poor American citizens. Birthright citizenship was never intended to be a carrot to entice these people to endanger themselves entering the country illegally.

That's a different subject, but you bring up some interesting points.

So let's just get rid of legal immigration. If bringing one hundred thousand unknown people into the country every month is fine then aren't we just wasting money and personnel on clunky old legal immigration?
