The good news is shootings and murders are down 10% year over year but unfortunately robberies and carjackings are up 50 percent. And it's "good news" only if you look at comparisons to recent years. I don't think any rational person would cheer for over 2000 shootings and 522 murders in 10 months.
From WTTP in Chicago:
However, police data also shows the number of robberies (25% increase) and motor vehicle thefts (up 59%) recorded year-to-date have risen dramatically compared to recent years.
There were 269 people shot in Chicago across the month of October, which includes 15 people who were wounded during a mass shooting at a Halloween party in North Lawndale. Even so, the number of people shot last month was down 8% compared to October 2022 and was also below totals from the same month in 2021 and 2020.
Through the first 10 months of 2023, there have been 2,110 shootings and 522 homicides recorded in Chicago, totals which are down 13% and 12% respectively, year-over-year.
