• Mateen's father reportedly supports the Afghan Taliban: Seddique Mateen is of Afghan descent and a U.S. resident. He holds strong political views, including support for the Afghan Taliban, according to a report in the Washington Post. In one video, Mateen expresses gratitude toward the Afghan Taliban, while denouncing the Pakistani government. “Our brothers in Waziristan, our warrior brothers in (the) Taliban movement and national Afghan Taliban are rising up,” he said. In a video he posted on Saturday, according to the Post, he bizarrely appears to be portraying himself as the president of Afghanistan.

Mateen, 29, of Fort Pierce, Fla., about 120 miles southeast of Orlando, is the suspected shooter. FBI Special Agent Ronald Hopper said at a news conference Mateen was a U.S. citizen who was born in New York. Mateen had been employed by the global security firm G4S since September 2007, the company said in a statement, and was not on duty at the time of shooting.

Florida state records list an Omar Mateen as a licensed security officer who also has a statewide firearms license. The suspect was killed by police after a hostage situation at the Pulse nightclub.

• Suspect known to FBI: The FBI first became aware of Mateen in 2013 after he made "inflammatory comments" to co-workers, Hopper said. The FBI "thoroughly investigated" the situation, Hopper said, including interviewing witnesses and conducting surveillance. Mateen was interviewed twice, but the FBI was unable to verify the substance of the comments and the case was closed. Hopper did not elaborate on what the comments were that concerned Mateen's co-workers.

In 2014, Mateen again came to the FBI's attention because of an association with Moner Mohammad Abusalha, an American who grew up in Florida and carried out a suicide bombing attack in Syria that year. But the FBI determined that the contact was minimal and the case was closed, Hopper said.

Mateen was not currently under investigation or surveillance by FBI, Hopper said

• Terrorism being investigated: Mateen acknowledged an allegiance to the Islamic State during a 911 call to law enforcement from the nightclub, a federal law enforcement official told USA TODAY. The official, who is not authorized to comment publicly, said it was believed the call came after the initial round of shooting.


Hopper said authorities are investigating whether there is a connection with radical Islam. "We do have suggestions that the individual may have leanings toward that particular ideology," Hopper said. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., told reporters that information he's received from members of the Senate Intelligence Committee staff indicates there may be some connection between the suspect and the Islamic State, the extremist group that has seized territory in Syria, Iraq and Libya.

• Suspect upset about men kissing: The suspect's father, Seddique Mir Mateen, told NBC News on Sunday that his son had recently expressed anti-gay sentiments and had become angry when he saw two men kissing a few months ago in Miami.

• Ex-wife says he beat her: Mateen’s ex-wife, speaking to the Washington Post on the condition of anonymity but later identified as Sitora Yusufi, said her former husband gave no signs of being a radical Islamist. “He seemed like a normal human being,” she told the paper, but she added that he was violent and mentally unstable and beat her often during their marriage. “He was not a stable person,” she said. “He beat me. He would just come home and start beating me up because the laundry wasn’t finished or something like that.” According to records cited by the Orlando Sentinel newspaper, the couple, who met online, were married in 2009 and divorced in 2011.

Couple Became Radicalized Well Before Shooting
The F.B.I. director said Wednesday that Mr. Farook and Ms. Malik had been talking of an attack as far back as two years ago. Federal investigators uncovered evidence that the couple were radicalized long before they got married in 2014. They have video evidence that the couple participated in target practice at ranges in the Los Angeles area and had even gone to a shooting range just days before the attack.

An even bigger attack was planned
Two federal sources told The Times that before the shooting and their subsequent deaths, the couple was in the final planning stages for an assault on a separate building or location “with a lot more people inside,” possibly at a nearby school or college. They based that assessment on data from digital equipment recovered from the couple’s Redlands home, all of which was smashed in an attempt to hide their activities.

Farook and Malik used five firearms during the attack, and left behind three pipe bombs wired to a remote control. They did not detonate.

The shooters fire over 150 rounds during the initial attack and during a gun battle with police afterwards. They had more than 1,400 .223 caliber rounds and more than 200 9-millimeter rounds with them.

At their home, police found 2,000 9-millimeter rounds, more than 2,500 .223 rounds, several hundred .22 long rifle rounds and 19 pipes that could be converted into bombs.

Three of the guns were purchased legally by Farook between 2007 and 2012. He bought the handguns at Annie’s Get Your Gun in Corona. Two of the rifles were purchased by Farook’s friend and former neighbor, Enrique Marquez Jr., in 2011 or 2012.

The K-1 'fiancee' visa

Investigators are looking into Malik’s K-1 “fiancee” visa, which she had to be granted to enter the country with Farook.

Two government sources told The Times Malik used the name of a neighborhood or street near her home in Pakistan, rather than her family's home address, on her application. Investigators have speculated that she did so to deflect any investigation of her family's reputed ties to Islamic militants in Punjab.

K-1 applicants, like other visa applicants, undergo extensive counter-terrorism screening that includes checks based on fingerprints and facial recognition software. Questions for the partner seeking to come to the U.S. include: "Do you seek to engage in terrorist activities while in the United States or have you ever engaged in terrorist activities?" and "Have you ever or do you intend to provide financial assistance or other support to terrorists or terrorist organizations?"

I know pointing this out sends liberals into the mother of all tizzies, but after the not-so righteous indignation loses it’s breath from it’s irrational temper tantrum the fact remains that terror attacks on the west have only one other thing in common outside of the fact that people die. Britain, more than any other nation in Europe seems to be totally and willfully oblivious to this. I’m not going to pretend to know how law enforcement actually works, but it’s a shame to say the least that these guys who are “known” keep getting into the end zone…so to speak

From national security and civil rights standpoints this is tough because so often these attacks end up being perpetrated by a lone wolf who is influenced by the greater machine of Muslim radicalization. There has got to be a way to figure out what to do about these “known” potential lone wolves like Salman Abedin (assuming he acted alone). What worries me is the cost of that kind of power, especially at the hands of the left who deems anything they don’t like to be “extremist,” which of course is the real problem with their refusal to attribute terror attacks “radical Islam” and “Muslim extremism”

Let's face it. Islamic Radicalism is very infectious and invasive, and hard to eradicate.

Whether you are importing Radicals first hand, or 2nd hand through their offspring, Islamic Radicalism will eventually find a home in the mind of a twisted Muslim regardless if he is a refugee or immigrant themselves or the sons and daughters of refugees and immigrants.

We are increasingly seeing domestic terrorist acts committed by the offspring of Islamic Immigrants or Refugees imported in to Western Countries.

This shows the virulent nature of Islamic Extremism when the refugee or immigrant fails to integrate in to it's host nation's culture.
