Voting solely on whether you are better off is short sighted and dumb. Anyone with a sense of civic responsibility, or even morality, will vote based on how it will impact the nation as a whole, not just their own personal circumstances.
Actually, 44% is not all that low when a president has to deal with the kinds of events this one has had to deal with. And keep in mind that the average American doesn't pay much attention to politics and figures if their favorite talking head says Orange Man Bad, there must be something bad. My economic situation is far better. Covid hasn't affected me at all as I am considered essential. Short of wearing my same dirty mask into stores, I have not changed any behavior.
