At least nine New Jersey schools were evacuated or placed on lockdown Tuesday after receiving threats from someone claiming to have planted bombs at the schools and threatening mass shootings, authorities said.
Officials at schools in Teaneck, Garfield, Tenafly, Clifton, Fair Lawn, Leonia, Bergenfield, Englewood and Hackensack received threats by someone who claimed to have planted a bomb. All of the schools are in Bergen County; it's not clear if other schools in the Garden State have also received threats.
Officers responded to Clifton High School, “where a coordinated effort between law enforcement and the school district was immediately initiated,” police said.
It was not immediatley clear how all the threats were received. At least three of the schools received them over voicemail, authorities said.
At least one of the messages also threatened a mass shooting, authorities said
“At this time, there is no indication of any validity to the threat. However, all precautions are being taken in order to ensure safety of the entire school district. Additional information will be made available as the investigation progresses,” Clifton police said in a statement.
