I took a nice government job as an engineer out of college
The job market was tough and the government was offering pay significantly lower than the private sector. Most people I graduated with asked "Why would you want to work for the government?"
For most of my career, I was making significantly less than my peers but had decent benefits, especially the retirement program. It was the retirement that kept me in the government for 33 years
I wouldn't trade my career with anyone I graduated with. All ended up getting layed off at some point in their career. The best engineers at the time got jobs with Kodak or Bell Labs both of which folded.
Working for the Dept of Defense, the projects I worked on were much more interesting than you would find in the private sector. I worked on Submarines, Aircraft carriers, GPS, Nightvision and major communications networks. I traveled around the country and did some kick ass tests costing tens of millions of dollars.
By the time I retired at 55, engineers from all sectors were dying for one of those crappy government jobs
