My parents are both in their high 90s and I'm not too far behind them being the oldest son. During my most recent visit, I try to do it two or three times a week.... The extremely rare subject of politics did come up. I was quite surprised. I'm going to tell you that my parents are very religious and extremely anti-abortion. I'm going to tell you that they are diametrically opposed to alternate lifestyles and rather judgmental when it comes to people that are on government handouts.... You would think that they would be Republicans but they're not.
This is where it gets interesting. The subject of the presidential candidates came up.... My mother who almost never makes a comment on these things is glowingly and support of Mz. Harris.... "She's so much better than that jerk Trump" she said.... I sat there in amazement trying very hard not to double in laughter. Dad chimed into saying " I don't understand how a piece of garbage like him got elected in the first place! ".... I wasn't about to say anything they're too far along in years to have that discussion with but it highlighted something very, very important. It's something that should be a free lesson to anyone running for national office.
It doesn't pay to be an asshole. This is a lesson I probably could have learned years ago having been at several work places where that two syllable nickname was applied to me on a regular basis. Little did they know anything about Kamala Harris's position on abortion, social economics or her progressive view of alternate lifestyle categories. They do know one thing... She's likable. I have to agree with that.
For the little bit of effort it takes just not to be a jerk there's probably 10 to 15% of the vote available. That's not a small margin and my parents are an excellent case in point. They're all about values they always have been and yet here the values mean nothing in the face of massive personality deficits versus personality pluses.
I can't emphasize enough what a lesson there is to learn here!
