Recovery Watch - American Food Banks Struggle To Keep Up Amidst "Surprising" Demand

Food banks across the country are seeing a rising demand for free groceries despite the growing economy, leading some charities to reduce the amount of food they offer each family.

U.S. food banks are expected to give away about 4 billion pounds of food this year, more than double the amount provided a decade ago, according to Feeding America, the nation’s primary food bank network. The group gave away 3.8 billion in 2013.

While reliance on food banks exploded when the economy tanked in 2008, groups said demand continues to rise year after year, leaving them scrambling to find more food.

Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Food Banks, who has been working in food charities since the 1980s, said that when earlier economic downturns ended, food demand declined, but not this time.

From the AP article: Food Banks Struggle to Meet Surprising Demand

With the rise of callous conservatism, and the transformation greed has made from a deadly sin to a virtue (it's your money!) donations to food banks has likely slowed (it's your food!). Giving to the poor, keeps them poor in this new adoption of charity.

One would think those who adopted the new iteration of conservative values would be pleased to see more families with less food. Isn't it all about personal responsibility? Those who want/need more simply need to get a job, or learn the art of dumster diving.

Shows that even a good economy requires more from all of us.

That is anathema to the far right.

Most of the jobs are low paying or fewer hours. Both republicans and democrats have allowed industry to leave the US so it can pay pennies for wages and get away from safety regulations

Nope. A lot are high paying jobs. Last 6 months I added total of 229 workers.
Maybe you don't even know or you guys are just being blind. Car makers are selling more cars than ever, there are short inventories of houses, buildings construction is up, home appliances more jobs, employment is low.
Rightwingers can deny it however you want but the evidence is in front of you. Economy is good and it's only getting better.

Here 90% of those hiring are fast food joints and other eateries. This is a fairly large city close to Atlanta....there should be better jobs but there ain't much manufacturing and such anymore.

Tariff the shit out of china and raise taxes on the top 10% biggest businesses. Stop the mergers!!! Time to learn from history of the early 20th century.

Allow competition!!!.

Cut legal immigration down to 100,000 per year to allow higher wages.

Seeing the big corporations are taking all the profit and paying workers as little as possible. Well, what do you expect? Do you really think cutting their taxes more is going to change a fucking thing...hahaha. These few dozen corporations are crowing out the field of business.

No one stopping you and all those like you from going and start your own businesses. then YOU all can crow about paying your employees 50 bucks an hour to start. Let us know how it works out for you all. You all seem to know so much about running other people's businesses.

Matthew will probably start his own business when he moves out of his mom's basement.

Obama's Failed Presidency

“I think Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that, you know, Richard Nixon did not, and in a way that Bill Clinton did not,” President Obama told the Reno Gazette-Journal in January 2008 during his Democratic primary showdown with Hillary Clinton. "He put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it."

And how did Obama hope to change "the trajectory of America"? To "put us on a fundamentally different path"?Departing Senior Advisor to the President for Strategy and Communications Dan Pfieffer explained how recently to The Huffington Post's Sam Stein:

I have a warehouse distribution in Atlanta. All of the 229 employees added are all high paying jobs. Five of the 229 was assigned in Atlanta the rest are for California, Minneapolis, Allentown.
We hired lots of temp employees for the warehouse in your area to help us with the overload. At average of 18 temp a month. Depending on the performance maybe 5 to 9 will become permanent employees.
