with brain shots. The Eskimos used to just "post" themselves at places where they knew the herds would be channeled into a very narrow gully, and shoot them in the top of the head as they moved thru these tight spaces. Thousands of deer are poached annually in the US or Canada, using a .22 rifle. It's just not that hard to get within bow and arrow distance of deer, guys. Obviously, at 30 yds and less, hitting the 6" brain circle, slow fire on a stationary target, is quite easy to do. Often, from a tree stand, and inside of a covering, you can even brace the rifle to make the hitting even easier.

a big, powerful gun, for which you are out of ammo, is of no use at all, and a man on foot is quite limited in how much bulk and weight he can carry. Noise scares off game and attracts enemies. I'll take 9 lbs of AR, .22 conversion unit, silencer, and scope, and 3 mags ( 30rds each ) of 223 and 2 lbs of 22lr ammo, any day, over 9 lbs of m1a 308, 3 mags, and 60 rds of ammo. That's 60 rds of 223 and 270 rds of .22lr. An empty, steel 20 rd 308 mag weighs 7 ozs. 308's are 16 rds to the lb, if they are the 165-168 gr bullets favored for large animals or long range sniping. You end up with no scope, no .22's, no silencer, bad, bad idea. Or you lug around another 3-4 lbs, which I could turn into another 30 rds of 223 and 400 rds of .22. :)
